Job Description
The Principal Engineer is the most senior software engineering position engaged full time in hands-on software implementation in the SDO. Engineers of this grade collaborate with peers and the Senior Engineering Manager to lead the overall design and development of Perceptive software products and custom solutions developed for client projects. Principal Engineers also take a key role in helping set and realize the broader architectural objectives of the SDO.
The Principal Engineer is an expert in architecting complex, enterprise solutions and has demonstrated experience developing, deploying and supporting enterprise systems of significant substance and longevity. They have expertise in a variety of technologies with a specialty in a particular space relevant to the SDO such as Enterprise Java/web applications or C++/C#/image processing and visualization.
Furthermore, the Principal Engineer plays an integral role in the ongoing identification and recommendation of new technologies, tools, methodologies and process improvement for the SDO.
The position participates in a team of software engineers and requires adherence to FDA regulations such as 21 CFR Part 11 and GCP.
Key Accountabilities
' Establish, document and develop the technical architecture on which the Perceptive product portfolio will operate.
' Work with the PMO and Operational management as a key member of the SDO responsible for developing a technical roadmap which ensures competitive advantage within the CRO marketplace.
' Ensure that the technical vision and architecture is not cannibalized based on project needs
' Evaluate 3rd party tools and components which will strengthen the product portfolio.
' Act as a trusted technical mentor across the Perceptive technology team.
' Serve as the 'buck stops here' ultimate escalation point for troubleshooting and resolving issues with production software deployments
' Lead a team of technical resources in software design, specification, development and testing
' Mentor and provide technical guidance for other engineers
' Design, implement, and architect software in support of product development and clients project delivery.
' Support technical consulting activities to clients in the pharmaceutical industry
' Adhere to Perceptive SOPs for change control, release, and validation
Desired Candidate Profile
' Thorough understanding of tiered architectures and user interface design
' Experience with one or more formal development methodologies (e.g. RUP, SCRUM, XP, Agile, Waterfall etc.)
' Solid object oriented design skills; demonstrated experience in leveraging design patterns within a software project; demonstrated experience in developing and enforcing a software architecture
' Demonstrate experience architecting enterprise systems and formulating technical architectures while leveraging UML.
' 6+ years Oracle RDBMS or equivalent RDBMS experience including database design. Significant experience interfacing with large scale Oracle development projects is essential.
' 6+ years using HTTP, HTML, XML, JavaScript and other relevant Internet standards and technologies
' Excellent written and oral communications including the production of requirements documents, technical specifications, and other artifacts of a software development process.
' Detail oriented, flexible, and works well in a team-oriented environment. Ability to work in deadline driven environment.
' 3+ years in a 21 CFR Part 11 FDA regulated environment
' Experience in clinical trials data management desirable
Special Skills - Java:
' 7+ years experience with server side Java technologies including J2EE, Servlets, JSPs, JSP tags, JDBC.
' Demonstrated experience in architecting complex web applications using accepted frameworks including Struts, Spring or equivalent
' Experience with one or more application servers including Tomcat, JBoss, Resin, WebSphere, Weblogic or equivalent
' Essential skills listed above required.
Special Skills ' C++:
' 7+ years experience with C++ on a Windows platform, MFC and GUI.
' Experience developing medical imaging applications with expert knowledge of image processing techniques.
' Exposure or demonstrated experience with .NET technologies preferred.

Education
' BS in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent
' MS or PhD preferred

' English - required
Minimum Work Experience
' 8+ years in a professional software development environment. Depending on position, experience should be within Java, .NET or C++ (MFC and GUI) development.
' 3+ years technical leadership experience
